Luke Thompson...

My name is Luke Thompson. I’m a graduate from Indiana University with a B.A. in Philosophy. I spent a year working as a paralegal after graduation, where my daily work involved editing legal documents for a team of attorneys. Even while working as a paralegal I read an average of five books a week during my downtime with some of my favorite series being the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher and the Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss.

When it comes to my editing, I want to work with an author to produce a quality manuscript while keeping true to the story the author wants to tell. I break my editing process down into three steps (detailed on the Services page) which allows me to tailor my skills to fit the needs of the author and the story. The majority of my experience is in the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy. However, I have also worked with authors of adult romance, general literature, and non-fiction.

Editing Services

I offer various levels of editing based on the needs of your manuscript. Not sure where your novel falls? Contact me and we’ll discuss the details.

Developmental Editing

I provide comments intended to guide the rewriting process in regards to plot structure and character development; high level changes to the manuscript, such as adding or removing scenes, characters, and plot points, are usually necessary. Additionally, I will also discuss marketing info such as target audience and genre with the author to ensure the novel fits where intended.

Copy Editing

An intensive stage in the editing process, I’ll read over your manuscript to provide feedback and advice with a focus on perfecting the style and content of your story. This is where I work on correcting inconsistencies within the story and restructuring sentences when necessary with a strong emphasis on clarity and dialogue.

If your manuscript simply needs grammatical or technical corrections, then proofreading is right for you. The focus in this stage is only on grammar, punctuation, and spelling, according to the Chicago Manual of Style. Microsoft Word’s Track Changes feature will become your new best friend. Fiction and non-fiction manuscripts of any length are accepted.
